For those of you living under a rock, boycotting TechCrunch after they dissed your startup, or otherwise frankly not giving a damn about a veritable Milestone in The History Of The Internet, the TechDev gang at Yahoo launched Pipes yesterday to much acclaim. Look, nerds like me and you, we've been talking about this Web of Data stuff since well before Web 2.0 was proclaimed, before Mondo 2000, and even before OMNI. For years we've been nuts for the whole Semantic Web enchilada, The Overbrain, Borges' Library and how cool is remixing and sampling way back before Paul's Boutique -- all this stuff that Joe Football flips by using his remote control. But Pipes is getting us closer and closer to nerdvana.

Of course, this is just gross and excessive bombast, because it's really a humble, early stage product in genuine beta that we wanted people to try and give us feedback so we could make it better, not expecting a whirlwind of attention -- which was quite gratifying! I'll not attempt to explain, as its been done much better by others including Tim O'Reilly, whose link is above. Jeremy Zawodny, another Yahoo, has linked to many stories and blog posts about Pipes, but I just wanted to chime in and say wow! and its an honor and a privilege to be working as the roadie for such veritable rock stars as Pasha, Ed, Jonathan and Daniel (with Kevin, Maciej, and Paul singing backup vocals.) You make a Yahoo proud.

Yahoo! Pipes: Location Extractor

Ich habe mich gefragt, wie Yahoo den geografischen Ort aus einer Webseite zieht. Der Location Extractor akzeptiert verschiedene Codierungen.

Location Extractor normalizes the location information in feeds that have already been geo-coded in some form. For example, if you are using any of the various forms of geo-coding a feed with tags it should work.

Supported formats are GML, W3C Basic GeoRSS, simple GeoRSS, Yahoo! Local’s API format, KML’s “LookAt” tag, and some variations on nearly all of those. Additionally, there is some support for extracting geo data from links to Yahoo! Maps, Google Maps, and Mapquest.

Once this data is extracted, you can access the Latitude and Longitude via the y:location element. When the data is rendered back out as RSS, we use abbreviated W3C Basic Geo which is just geo:lat and geo:long tags. (Note: this format is supported by the Yahoo! Ajax Maps API)

Die Pipes werden von Yahoo! als interaktiver Feed-Aggregator bezeichnet. Der Dienst ist ein “Hosted Service”. Das heisst, die Software liegt auf Yahoo!-Server im Internet. Angemeldete Nutzer können ihren persönlichen XML-Datenstrom erstellen. Die neue zusammengestellten Feeds sind nicht auf Texte beschränkt. Alles was über XML erreichbar ist, kann integriert werden. Dazu gehören z.B. Aufrufe von Videos, Bildern und Postcasts. Zusätzlich lassen sich Nutzereingaben hinzumischen.
